My question is why should it take Zac and his Mom having 'courage' to talk to us? No one wants a crazy person? How did Zac earn our fear? How did he earn the certainty that no one wants a crazy person? What did he do to create the disease that now controls his life? This is the face of mental illness. A sweet young man and his loving Mom. Dealing with an incomprehensible and life-changing illness that make him a pariah in his own community.
I know Zac. Not this Zac, but other people who have the same problem and who deal with the stigma of mental illness. And my experience is that Zac and his story are common. He is right. No one wants a 'crazy person'. Which is sad. And totally destructive to successful recovery and normalization for Zac and his peers. Clearly, Zac is not violent. He is not frightening. He is a human being. With an additional struggle that many others have some experience with. One in four in this country struggle with some kind of mental illness. Whether it is chronic depression or schizophrenia. Bipolar disease or paranoia.
Take the opportunity to get to know Zac and others involved in this struggle. On this website, many courageous people share their stories. Give them a chance and get to know them. And maybe you will find out that at the heart of it, they are just like you. And maybe someone you love...
