This is a busy time for me. I work in retail. Which means that we have lots of customers. I work strange hours. And for an older woman who is easily exhausted, that can be difficult. Today, I'm off. Which led me to consider the importance of rest as a recovery tool. Until I sat down at the computer, all I was really doing with my day was playing music, dancing around, and simply existing. (I'm not even going to publish this until this day is over. Rest is primary.) My depression and anxiety tend to become worse when I get tired. Exhaustion doesn't lead to insight or the ability to cope for me. So, rest is necessary for me to function. I think that is true for all human beings. What do you think? Is there anyone out there who can honestly tell me that they function at their best when tired? If you say you do, I will politely tell you that you are lying. Of course, rest doesn't just involve sleep. It also involves down time. Today, I'm giving myself the gift of time and space to simply be.
I would like to accomplish a few things. For example, eating might be necessary. I will cook myself something so that I can nourish my body. I may take a walk to go get a haircut, because I don't find my bushy hair comfortable or attractive. But other then the basics, I'm going to allow myself to do what feels good today because tomorrow I will be back to the non-stop customers coming in because of the holiday season. Why did I feel the need to mention this? Because I think that we don't always allow ourselves time to just be. We are always doing...going.....and guilting ourselves when we don't get enough done. Of course, a certain amount of that is necessary. We have to work to survive. Even if you stay at home all the time, you work. Probably more than someone who works an eight-hour a day job.
For me to stay healthy and happy mentally and emotionally, I have to rest. So do you. Today, I'm giving myself a holiday gift. Peace. Relaxation. A guilt-free space. Fun. Music. A walk. When was the last time you did that for yourself? Do you sit in the guilt if you rock in your chair and just exist? If you do, it may be time to cultivate a new skill. Just sit and exist. Be at peace. Allow your mind to just float. Rest! And while you are doing so, take a second to remind yourself that you are important. Life is so short. We are all gone in the blink of an eye. So capturing time and space to just be is something to be thoroughly enjoyed. Just let it happen. Sending love......
