I spent some time today reading over some of my articles in preparation for figuring out where they might go in the book. Not my favorite task. But one that is necessary if I'm to reach the goal. But as I read, I realized how much I've explored and learned about myself and about my mental illness this year. And I also recognized that all these lessons were not easy. Some of them came from much pain. Growth doesn't just happen. Most of us realize that out of the worst situations and experiences come the greatest gifts. Is the pain worth it? Maybe. Maybe not. Only the individual can define it. We have all seen a world in pain over the last year. Hate and anger are the symptoms. I know that you share my concern about this. I've heard from many of you about it. And there is a sense that it all is hopeless. There is no possibility. I recognize this because my depression has led me to believe in 'hopelessness' for many years.
As you know if you read my blog, I have tried to change my approach in recent years. I want to see the hope. I want to believe in the possibility. And the only way I can do that is through recognizing the power in my own mind. I have the ability to create hope from ashes. So do you. In some ways, that is exactly what the last few years have been about. Seems to me, this world needs a little bit of that hope. We need to recognize the power that hatred and anger have had on us. And we need to move past it into the possibility. It is time. We have the capability to change the world through the power that we have. How do we go about doing that? Here is the answer that I've come up with: We make a personal commitment to act in love and possibility. When we are faced with hatred, we need to make sure there are consequences if injury is done. Then we have to move past our own prejudices and create ties where there used to be hatred. Humanity has far more in common than it does in differences.
WE create this world. We make the decisions that shape the experiences that other human beings live with. We can choose to live in hatred and anger. Or we can live in love and possibility. My wish for all of us is that we begin to make other choices. You are in control in your own little corner of the world. What this means for me is that I can respond with love. I can challenge hatred as I see it. And I can remember that my attitude can create a wellspring of good feelings in other people. I can be acceptance. I can fight hatred. I can influence others. So can you. My wish is that you begin to see the hope. We can make 'hope' the word of the year. Sending love. Happy New Year!
