Here is the link that I'm basing this article on: http://bit.ly/YOfUl6. I believe in the value of writing. That is why I do it. I think that writing leads to healing. If you let it. The article supports my view. As a matter of fact, the article suggests that there is a biochemical reason for this benefit. Dopamine helps with depression. And dopamine is released when someone writes. I have enjoyed my brief writing career. So much so that I am looking forward to the creation of a book. That is certainly not a goal that I would have had prior to my blog. And the healing I find is invaluable. I process issues in my life. I advocate for accessible treatment. I share knowledge and my "experience, strength, and hope". It is an amazing experience.
I also love reading what others share about their experiences with mental illness. I learn from them. I read many blogs regularly. It is an affirming experience because I learn about the experiences other people have with mental illness. I frequently can relate to what they say. It is amazing how little I feel competitive with these other bloggers. It is a sharing thing. I think we learn from each other. Recovery is about "us" as much as about "I". So, not only do I believe writing is good for me, I believe it is good for you too. Selfishly, I would like you to share what you say. But writing for yourself is also great.
I believe that when people raise their voices, change is made. I'm honest, sometimes to a fault. I think there is value in sharing with the world at large. If we talk to that larger audience, we might begin to see changes in the way that people view mental illness. I understand the reluctance to do so. But I encourage you to explore the impact of your mental illness. And acknowledge your worth as a human being in spite of it.
Let me know if you have a blog to share. I want to hear your viewpoint. We can advocate for ourselves together.
