NAMI...and how you can support those with mental illness...

On May 4th, 2013, Orlando’s chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will be having a NAMI Walk in Orlando.  If you have been touched by what I have written about mental illness, I am requesting that you consider walking.  The goal of NAMI is so needed. They strive to advocate, support and educate those affected by mental illness. In a country in which funding for those suffering from mental illness has been severely cut, the work that NAMI does is crucial.  From education to support groups, NAMI is one of the best options for the mentally ill in the Orlando area.  I would truly like to offer my support to this excellent organization.  I hope to be out there walking with you on May 4th.  At the bottom of this article, I will put a link to information about the walk, as well as information about what NAMI does and how they impact the lives of the mentally ill in this community. I strongly suggest you look over the website.  You will see the services they provide.

As I have discussed frequently, I think that treatment is what will make a difference for those suffering from mental illness.  Access to treatment is not what it should be. Many of those suffering from mental illness don’t have insurance.  It is a very real problem.    So maintaining medication and getting therapy can be complex for many sufferers. Given the large numbers of individuals suffering from some type of mental illness, I think that this problem has impacted our country greatly.  I hope that you recognize that participating in this walk is a vote for compassion and for change. Americans are a powerful people.

Mental illness does kill people. And it can destroy families. Recognizing the lethality of mental illness is important.  I think our country is starting to do that. I hope that such recognition leads to further recognition about how we can all be responsible for making the changes necessary to make this world a more comfortable place for the mentally ill and those that love them:

1. We can start and continue a national conversation about mental illness and begin to erase the stigma. We can listen to the stories of people struggling with mental illness to further our education.
2.  We can encourage our community to begin to examine the cost of ignoring the needs of the mentally ill.
3.  We can become advocates for the rights of the mentally ill.
4.  We can show we take mental illness seriously by supporting agents for change, including NAMI.

Thank you for your consideration of participating in the NAMI walk. Join me in my commitment to live in the solution. I hope to see you there.
